Hootsuite vs Sprout Social vs Donivo: Which Fits?
·16 min read

The short answer
Choose Donivo first when your real job is creating one post, adapting it for several networks, and publishing it reliably. It starts free with no credit card, supports eight networks, and avoids per-seat suite pricing. Choose Hootsuite when ten entry-level accounts, a central inbox, and basic listening in one $99-per-user plan fit the work. Choose Sprout Social when five-profile publishing at $79 is enough, or when Sprout's Professional and Advanced workflows line up with your approval, reporting, and customer-care needs.
Donivo is our product, so the recommendation is not neutral. The boundary is: choose a broader suite when inbox, listening, formal approvals, or advanced reporting are requirements rather than attractive extras.
Hootsuite and Sprout Social are broad social operations suites. Donivo is the focused alternative for people who mainly need to publish consistently across several networks. That difference matters more than a feature-count contest: a hands-on publisher can start free with Donivo, while a team that needs a shared inbox, formal approvals, deep reporting, or listening should evaluate one of the larger suites.
Full disclosure: Donivo is our product. We built it for creators, small businesses, agencies, and lean marketing teams that want straightforward publishing without enterprise complexity. This comparison gives Donivo the same direct treatment as Hootsuite and Sprout Social, including the jobs it deliberately does not cover.
This comparison uses the vendors' current US annual-billing prices and published plan boundaries. Details were checked on August 2, 2026 against Hootsuite's plan table and Sprout Social's 2026 plan guide, plus Donivo's current pricing. Prices exclude taxes and optional add-ons and can change.
Hootsuite vs Sprout Social vs Donivo at a glance
| Decision area | Hootsuite | Sprout Social | Donivo | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lowest published annual price | $99 per user per month for Standard | $79 per seat per month for Essentials | Free for 3 accounts and 30 posts per month; founding Starter is $7 per month | Donivo is the lowest-risk place to start when publishing is the job. The suites cost more because they bundle broader operations. |
| Social profiles at entry | Up to 10 social accounts | Up to 5 social profiles | 3 accounts on Free; 10 accounts per workspace on Starter | Count profiles, workspaces, and paid users. Donivo bundles account capacity instead of charging a suite price for every seat. |
| Publishing | Unlimited scheduling, content calendar, recommendations, and per-network customization | Multi-network compose, collaborative calendar, optimal send times, and profile-level planning | Create once, tailor by network, and publish across 8 networks with retries and failure alerts | Choose Donivo when this is the complete job. Pay for a suite when publishing must share a system with broader social operations. |
| Unified inbox | Included in Standard | Smart Inbox begins with Standard at $199 per seat | Not included; Donivo is a publishing scheduler | If incoming customer conversations belong in the same tool, choose a suite. Do not buy that capability if another team already handles it. |
| Approval workflows | Advanced at $399 per user per month | Professional at $299 per seat per month | No formal multi-stage approval chain | Donivo fits hands-on publishers with a direct workflow. Regulated or multi-stage review requires one of the broader suites. |
| Analytics | Standard reports and competitor benchmarking; custom reporting on higher tiers | Profile and post reporting in Essentials; competitor and paid insights in Professional | Focused on publishing; not a replacement for suite-level analytics | Define the recurring report first. If nobody will act on suite-level reporting, keep the publishing workflow simpler. |
| Listening | Seven-day brand and competitor mention search in Standard; advanced listening is an Enterprise capability | A premium add-on that is not included by default in Standard, Professional, or Advanced | Not included | Choose Donivo when listening is not part of the job. If it is, request comparable suite quotes using the same brief. |
Pricing: compare the first usable plan, not the first number
Hootsuite Standard starts at $99 per user per month with annual billing. It covers up to ten social accounts, unlimited scheduling, one inbox, standard reporting, benchmarking against five competitors, and a seven-day search for brand and competitor mentions. Professional rises to $199 per user and adds unlimited social accounts, deeper reporting, inbox automation, and broader listening history. Advanced is $399 per user and adds approval workflows, message routing, internal collaboration, and team reporting.
Sprout Social Essentials starts at $79 per seat per month with annual billing. It covers five profiles, publishing, a shared calendar, optimal send times, and profile and post reporting. Standard is $199 per seat and adds the Smart Inbox, keyword and location monitoring, review management, and collaboration. Professional is $299 per seat and adds unlimited profiles, competitor and paid insights, message tagging, and publishing approvals. Advanced is $399 per seat and adds customer-care reporting, inbox sentiment, message-spike alerts, API access, and helpdesk integrations.
Donivo starts at $0 with three social accounts, 30 posts per month, and no credit card required. Founding Starter is $7 per month or $70 per year for the first 25 qualifying customers; the standard Starter price is $10 per month or $100 per year. Starter includes two workspaces, ten accounts per workspace, and 300 posts per month. The plan price covers its account allowance rather than adding another charge for every channel or user.
The price comparison changes with the job
For publishing alone, Donivo Free costs $0 and founding Starter costs $7 per month, compared with $99 for Hootsuite Standard and $79 for Sprout Essentials on annual billing. For one seat with a unified inbox, the relevant suite prices are $99 for Hootsuite Standard and $199 for Sprout Standard. For three seats with formal approvals, the base-plan math is $1,197 for Hootsuite Advanced and $897 for Sprout Professional per month. Donivo is not an equivalent inbox or approval product. Its advantage is avoiding those costs when publishing is the whole requirement.
Publishing: both are capable, but the entry plans solve different-sized jobs
Hootsuite Standard is the roomier entry plan. Its ten-account allowance is useful when one person publishes for several brands or networks, and unlimited scheduling avoids a separate queue calculation. Its current plan materials also list a cross-network calendar, per-network customization, best-time recommendations, asset tools, and link tracking.
Sprout Essentials is deliberately narrower. It supports five profiles and centers the entry experience on composing, scheduling, send-time recommendations, a collaborative calendar, and basic reporting. That is enough for a publisher whose work stops after planning, publishing, and checking performance. The lower price loses its advantage if the same team immediately needs the Smart Inbox or more profiles.
Donivo narrows the workflow further and makes that focus the selling point. Create one post, tailor the copy or media for each destination, then schedule it across Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, and Bluesky. Automatic retries and failure alerts help prevent a missed publish from disappearing silently. For a creator or lean team, that is the useful work without the suite administration around it.
Run the same trial in both tools: connect the actual profile mix, customize one post for every destination, move it through your real review process, then reschedule and verify it. A polished demo with placeholder accounts will not expose account limits or handoff friction.
Inbox and customer care: Hootsuite bundles earlier, Sprout goes deeper by tier
Hootsuite Standard includes a centralized inbox for supported public and private messages. Professional adds saved replies, automated responses, and routing tools, while Advanced is the team-workflow tier for assignments, internal coordination, and measuring response work. Hootsuite's Advanced plan overview positions it for teams coordinating both content and customer care.
Sprout Essentials does not include the Smart Inbox. Sprout's Standard plan documentation lists the unified Smart Inbox, review management, brand-keyword monitoring, cases, and core reports. Professional adds message tagging and fuller team analytics. Advanced adds inbox sentiment, customer-care reporting, Salesforce and Zendesk integrations, and alerts for sudden message-volume changes.
Choose from the inbox backward. List the networks that create customer conversations, the response target, who owns each message, when a supervisor must step in, and what leadership expects to see in a care report. If those jobs are not part of the brief, neither suite's customer-care depth should drive the purchase.
Donivo does not include a social customer-service inbox. That is a reason to choose Hootsuite or Sprout when your team owns incoming conversations. It is also a reason to choose Donivo when replies already live with another person or system and you do not want to pay for duplicate capability.
Approvals and collaboration: Sprout reaches approvals one tier earlier
Hootsuite places structured approval workflows in Advanced at $399 per user per month. The plan also includes internal comments, message routing, and team-performance reporting. That bundle makes sense when publishing approvals and customer-care coordination belong to the same operating system.
Sprout lists approval workflows in Professional at $299 per seat per month. Its current approval-workflow documentation supports multi-step, multi-user review of outgoing messages. Advanced can also add external approvers without Sprout accounts. Teams with client or legal review should test the exact path from draft to rejection, revision, approval, and audit history.
A feature checkmark is not enough. Count how many people create, review, and approve posts; whether every approver needs a paid seat; whether outside stakeholders must log in; and whether a bypass needs to be recorded. That is where the cost and workflow differences become real.
Donivo is designed for a more direct publishing path and does not provide a formal multi-stage approval chain. Small teams that approve content before it reaches the scheduler can keep the publishing step simple. Teams that need recorded, role-based approvals inside the product should choose Sprout Professional, Hootsuite Advanced, or another governance-led platform.
Analytics: decide what someone will do with the report
Hootsuite Standard covers cross-network performance, paid and organic metrics, report templates, recommendations, and basic competitor benchmarking. Professional adds custom reporting and scheduled exports. Advanced adds team-performance measurement, while Enterprise is where advanced analytics and organization- level controls enter the evaluation.
Sprout Essentials provides profile and post reporting. Standard adds group-level reporting and the data created by inbox and monitoring work. Professional expands into competitor, paid, tagging, and team reports. Sprout also sells Premium Analytics as an add-on for configurable reports, deeper filtering, and shareable report links.
Write down the recurring report before the demo: audience, question, networks, date range, required metrics, segmentation, export format, and decision. Ask each vendor to build that report live. More metrics do not help when no one knows which action the report should change.
Donivo is not the choice for suite-level analytics. Choose it when the operational problem is getting approved content onto the right networks without repetitive work. If leadership needs custom cross-network dashboards, competitor analysis, or team performance reporting, the broader products earn their place.
Listening: the seat-price table is not a listening quote
Hootsuite includes a limited form of listening in Standard: a seven-day search for brand, competitor, topic, and hashtag mentions with summaries and sentiment. Its higher self-serve tiers expand the history and reporting, while the broad Talkwalker-powered listening product is positioned with Enterprise.
Sprout Social Listening is a premium add-on, not a default part of Standard, Professional, or Advanced. Sprout's current Listening access guide says the add-on must be arranged through an account manager or sales team. That means public Sprout seat prices do not reveal the total cost of a listening deployment.
Give both sales teams the same brief: required sources, topics, languages, historical window, saved queries, alert latency, sentiment needs, exports, and number of users. Compare coverage with sample queries, then compare quotes. A broad claim such as “advanced listening” is not a usable requirement.
Donivo does not sell social listening. If you do not have a documented listening brief, that omission can save money and setup time rather than create a gap. If listening drives real research, support, or reputation decisions, choose a product built for it and evaluate the full quote.
Best fit by real workflow
A creator, small business, or lean team publishing across several networks
Start with Donivo
The free plan removes purchase risk, while Starter bundles ten accounts per workspace for one predictable price. You keep the workflow focused on publishing instead of configuring an enterprise suite.
One publisher, up to five profiles, publishing and basic reports
Sprout Social Essentials
Its $79 annual-billing price is the lower published entry point when inbox, approvals, and premium listening are not required.
One publisher, six to ten accounts, central inbox, and basic listening
Hootsuite Standard
The $99 plan lists ten accounts, unlimited scheduling, one inbox, and a seven-day listening search.
A team that needs formal publishing approvals
Compare Sprout Professional with Hootsuite Advanced
These are the first current tiers that clearly list approval workflows. Sprout starts lower, but workflow and account needs still decide the fit.
Customer-care reporting and helpdesk integration
Sprout Social Advanced deserves the first demo
Its plan specifically lists customer-care reports plus Salesforce and Zendesk integrations. Verify each channel and case workflow.
Deep listening, governance, or organization-wide controls
Run a quote-based enterprise evaluation
Sprout sells Listening as an add-on, while Hootsuite reserves its advanced listening and governance capabilities for Enterprise. Public seat prices are incomplete here.
What current Reddit discussions add to the comparison
Recent Reddit discussions are useful for finding questions, not for proving product facts. In a January 2026 enterprise-tool discussion, participants repeatedly separated day-to-day usability from leadership reporting, listening depth, and budget. A June 2026 Hootsuite versus Sprout thread asked a sharper question: whether a team would act on the extra listening data often enough to justify switching.
Those threads also contain vendor promotion and unsupported opinions. The useful takeaway is the evaluation frame: separate daily publishing, stakeholder reporting, inbox work, and listening before comparing suites. Verify every capability and limit against current first-party documentation.
An eight-question buying checklist
- How many social profiles and paid users are required on day one and after twelve months?
- Is the job publishing only, or must the same system handle incoming customer conversations?
- Which posts require approval, how many stages exist, and do external approvers need access?
- Which recurring reports must be delivered, to whom, and in what format?
- What listening sources, history, languages, alerts, and exports are truly required?
- Which integrations are mandatory for assets, ads, CRM, helpdesk, authentication, or compliance?
- What is the annual total after seats, extra profiles, listening, analytics, onboarding, and other add-ons?
- Can Donivo's free plan prove the publishing workflow before the team commits to a paid suite?
Why Donivo is the better first choice for hands-on publishers
Start with Donivo if your recurring problem is copying content between apps, keeping several account queues organized, or noticing too late that a scheduled post failed. It keeps those jobs in one focused workflow, covers eight visual and text-led networks, retries failed publishes automatically, and alerts you when something needs attention.
The commercial case is equally practical. You can test three accounts and 30 monthly posts for free without entering a card. Starter bundles ten accounts per workspace instead of charging a separate suite price for every seat or channel, and eligible founding customers keep their rate while the subscription stays active. That makes Donivo the lower-commitment choice when a bigger feature list would not change the work you do.
The tradeoff is explicit: Donivo does not replace the advanced listening, customer-service inboxes, suite-level reporting, or approval chains described above. Choose Hootsuite or Sprout Social when those capabilities are mandatory. Otherwise, start with the smaller product and keep the time and budget for the content itself. Compare the focused workflow in our Hootsuite alternative guide and Sprout Social alternative guide.
If the choice is still too broad, compare permanent free tiers in our free social media management tools guide or scan the wider social media scheduler comparison. For most hands-on publishers, Donivo is the sensible first test. Move to a broader suite only when a documented requirement proves you need one.
