How to Make Your X (Twitter) Account Public

If your posts are protected, only approved followers can see them, which limits discovery outside that group. Making your X (formerly Twitter) account public takes about thirty seconds. The setting is called Protect your posts, and you simply turn it off.
Why make your account public?
A protected account is visible to approved followers, but its posts cannot be reposted with X's repost control and do not appear in public search. Every new follower also needs approval. Going public lets anyone discover and share your posts, which can support an audience, brand or business that depends on public reach.
On the web
- Click More in the left menu, then Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging.
- Uncheck Protect your posts and confirm.
On iPhone and Android
- Tap your profile photo, then Settings and privacy.
- Tap Privacy and safety → Audience and tagging.
- Toggle Protect your posts off.

What changes when you go public
- Anyone can see your posts without following you.
- Your posts can be reposted by others.
- Your posts can show up in search results and on the open web.
- Posts you published while protected become visible too.
One detail is easy to miss: pending follower requests are not accepted automatically when you go public. X says those accounts will need to follow you again. Review the requests first if you want to approve any of them. See X's follower-request guidance.
What to weigh before you switch
Going public can help discovery, but it's worth a moment's thought first. Your entire post history becomes visible, not just future posts - so if you've posted anything under the assumption it was private, review it before you flip the switch. Once a post is public it can be screenshotted, reposted or cached elsewhere, and turning protection back on later won't pull those copies back. If only some content is sensitive, deleting or archiving it first is cleaner than staying private forever.
Troubleshooting: the setting won't save
If the toggle won't stick or appears greyed out, try these in order:
- Refresh or restart the app. A stale session can cause this; log out and back in if a simple refresh doesn't work.
- Update the app. Older versions occasionally misplace the setting - install the latest release.
- Try the web version. If mobile is stubborn, try changing it at x.com in a browser.
